Conventional
Formula used in the feeding of term infants is not suitable for
premature infants; for them specially fortified formulas should be
used.
Low
birth weight & premature infants grow more rapidly than term
infants. They require adequate intake to support this growth.
It
has been postulated that premature infants may have a greater need
for DHA supplementation, since the core amount of DHA transfer
from mother to foetus occurs near the end of pregnancy. Infant
formulas containing DHA may have some benefit in this patient
population.
